Best Sunset Spots in Paphos: A Local's Guide (Including Our Rooftop)
Paphos faces due west — every evening the sun drops straight into the Mediterranean. Here are the spots we keep coming back to, from harbour-side tables to ancient ruins.

Why Paphos Has the Best Sunsets in Cyprus

Geography matters. Paphos sits on the western coast of Cyprus, facing directly into the open Mediterranean with nothing between you and the horizon. While Limassol and Larnaca face south (and their sunsets disappear behind headlands), Paphos gets a clean, unobstructed drop of the sun into the sea almost every evening.

Combine that with 340 days of sunshine a year and a harbour lined with west-facing restaurants, and you understand why sunset is essentially a daily event here.

We have been watching Paphos sunsets from our rooftop and from every vantage point in the area. These are the spots we keep going back to.

1. Paphos Harbour and the Medieval Castle

Best for: The classic Paphos sunset, no effort required

The harbour faces directly west. The Medieval Castle sits at the end of the breakwater, and as the sun drops, it silhouettes the castle against an orange sky with the Mediterranean behind it. It is the most iconic sunset view in Paphos and it is available every single evening.

You have two options: grab a table at one of the waterfront restaurants (The Pelican and Alea are both good sunset spots) or simply walk along the harbour wall and find a seat. No booking, no entrance fee, no driving.

Tip: Get your spot 30 to 45 minutes before sunset. The harbour wall fills up quickly in summer.

2. The Poseidon Suites Rooftop

Best for: A private, elevated perspective

We are biased, obviously. But our rooftop infinity pool terrace gives you an elevated, 360-degree view that you simply cannot get from ground level. You can see the castle, the harbour, the coastline stretching north, and the open sea. On a clear evening, the colours are extraordinary.

The advantage here is privacy and calm. No jostling for a table, no crowds. Just the pool, a sun lounger, and the sky.

3. Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock)

Best for: A dramatic, iconic Cyprus sunset

About 25 kilometres east of Paphos on the road to Limassol, Petra tou Romiou is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite — the spot where the goddess of love is said to have emerged from the sea foam. The massive sea stack glows golden under the setting sun, and the surrounding coastline is wild and undeveloped.

This is probably the most photographed sunset location in all of Cyprus. It is less crowded than the harbour, more dramatic, and feels genuinely special. There is a viewing area on the cliffs above and a path down to the beach.

Tip: You cannot climb the rock, but you can swim around it. Legend says that doing so will bless you with eternal beauty.

4. Paphos Lighthouse (Faros)

Best for: Panoramic views, peace and quiet

The lighthouse stands on a low hill inside the Archaeological Park, overlooking the coastline. It is an easy walk up, and the area around it is calm and open — far less crowded than the harbour. The lighthouse itself makes an excellent foreground subject for sunset photos, and the views extend from the harbour to Coral Bay.

Tip: The Archaeological Park gates close at 7:30pm in summer, so check timing.

5. The Coastal Promenade

Best for: A sunset walk rather than a fixed spot

Rather than watching the sunset from one location, walk the coastal promenade during the golden hour. The five-kilometre path from the harbour towards the Tombs of the Kings faces west the entire way. As you walk, the light changes constantly — the castle behind you is silhouetted, the sea beside you turns gold, and the sky ahead shifts through every shade of orange and pink.

Start from the harbour about an hour before sunset and walk north. You will not need a destination.

6. The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park at Dusk

Best for: Atmosphere and history combined

Watching the golden light fall across 2,000-year-old Roman mosaics is something special. The Archaeological Park takes on a completely different character in the late afternoon — the stones glow, the shadows lengthen, and if you time it right, you can have the ancient Odeon amphitheatre almost to yourself.

This is not a "sunset spot" in the traditional sense, but the atmosphere in the last hour before closing is worth experiencing.

7. Muse Cafe Kitchen Bar

Best for: Sunset cocktails with a panoramic view

Located in upper Kato Paphos, Muse has floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor terrace with panoramic views over Paphos and the sea. It is popular with locals for evening drinks and serves excellent cocktails. The elevated position gives you a wider perspective than anything at harbour level.

8. The Akamas Peninsula

Best for: The most dramatic sunset on the island (worth the drive)

If you are willing to drive 45 minutes north, the Akamas Peninsula — Cyprus's last truly wild coastline — offers what many locals consider the best sunset in Cyprus. There is no light pollution, no buildings, just the undeveloped headland and the open Mediterranean.

The Blue Lagoon area and the Baths of Aphrodite lookout are both excellent spots. This is a half-day trip rather than a quick sunset run, but it is unforgettable.

Sunset Times in Paphos

Paphos sunset times vary significantly through the year:

  • January: Around 5:10pm
  • March: Around 6:15pm
  • June: Around 8:00pm
  • August: Around 7:35pm
  • October: Around 6:00pm
  • December: Around 4:55pm
  • We recommend arriving at your chosen spot at least 30 minutes before sunset. The colours often peak 10 to 15 minutes after the sun has actually dropped below the horizon.
